What Counts as Oral Surgery?
Oral surgery is any surgery that corrects issues affecting your mouth or jaw. The most common types include:
- Tooth extractions
- Root canal surgery
- Tissue, tooth, and jaw repair after trauma
- Tumor removal
- Gum grafting after periodontal disease
- Periodontal surgery
How Do I Prepare?
The team gives you specific instructions for your procedure. Common preparations include not eating or drinking for at least eight hours beforehand and arranging for someone to drive you home, both of which help your anesthesia and sedation go smoothly. In some cases you may need to adjust medications in the days before your procedure.
What Does Recovery Look Like?
Recovery varies by procedure, but the team usually recommends a liquid or soft-food diet at first: applesauce, yogurt, cottage cheese, jello, scrambled eggs, mashed banana. Stay away from hot and spicy foods right after surgery; they can disrupt clot formation and delay healing.
You will typically get at least one prescription. Take antibiotics as directed to avoid infection, use any pain medication as prescribed, and rinse with salt water several times a day for the first few days.
Every oral surgery is different, but at Saugus Dental Laser Center they all have one thing in common: patient comfort comes first.
